Description of the Calligraphy Artwork in Thuluth Jali Script titled Ayat an-Nur by Master Saber Safaei

The Thuluth Jali script is one of the most beautiful and widely used types of Islamic calligraphy. Its popularity stems from the variety of compositions it allows in different shapes and forms, as well as the soft and elegant curves it features. This script is one of the six scripts that were introduced or created by Ibn Muqla Shirazi in the 4th century AH and later reached its peak during the Abbasid period under the master calligrapher Yaqut al-Musta’simi. Since then, it has been used in architectural works, Quranic inscriptions, and decorative arts.

To create this artwork, the following stages were undertaken:

  1. The first and most crucial stage is the initial sketch, where various pens are used to create different shapes and compositions. The composition or arrangement is the fundamental stage in creating the artwork, which is based on visual aesthetics and calligraphic principles, requiring a lot of time and precision.
  2. After approving the initial sketch and composition, the final sketch is made, and the appropriate pen and ink are chosen for the selected paper, resulting in the final composition. This stage might take days or weeks, requiring great attention and patience to ensure all elements, curves, and angles are harmonious, rhythmic, organized, and beautiful.
  3. The third stage is practicing the elements and finally executing the artwork. Since this piece is created on handmade sized paper, it is highly important and sensitive, and several sheets of paper might have been used for practice or during execution.
  4. The fourth stage involves adding details, decorations, and refining the overall artwork, which consists of numerous steps. In this stage, minor errors are corrected, and the final touches are applied using thinner pens and very fine brushes with great care. The retouching and refining stage is the longest and perhaps the most challenging, taking months, but it results in a creation that reaches the highest levels of quality and beauty.
