Description of the Ornamental Kufic Script (Kufi Moraqq) titled “Wisdom and Intellect” – Dr. Saber Safaei
The Kufic script is the first Islamic script and is considered one of the most beautiful forms of calligraphy. Kufic has various types: architectural, decorative, and book scripts, each with its own branches and styles. The decorative type includes styles such as Moshahhar (ornamented), Moraqq (foliated), Mashjar (floral), Fatimi, Mashbaq (interlaced), Moaqqad (knotted), and more. The present piece is of the Kufi Moraqq style.
Kufi Moraqq is one of the most beautiful and artistic styles of decorative Kufic script. One of its main characteristics is the use of geometric patterns and intricate arabesque designs intertwined with the script, giving it a unique artistic beauty. The use of negative space and the integration of arabesque motifs emerging from within the script adds a special elegance to the work, creating a masterpiece of unparalleled beauty.
This style of Kufic was used in the early Islamic period to decorate inscriptions, Qurans, and other important texts, and it remains one of the most valuable and beautiful styles of Islamic calligraphy. This script has been widely used in various arts, including handicrafts, architecture, inscription carving, and the creation of artistic pieces.
Stages of Creating the Work
To create this exquisite work, like other precious works by Master Safaei, several stages were followed, which are briefly outlined below:
First Stage: Sketching to create the composition and arrangement of letters and words in the work. This is done using grid paper, adhering to the visual and aesthetic principles of calligraphy. This stage requires knowledge of visual literacy and graphic design.
Second Stage: Executing the final sketch in the desired size while paying attention to the layout of the paper. This stage may take days or weeks, requiring great precision and patience to ensure that all letters, words, curves, and angles are harmonious, rhythmic, organized, and beautiful.
Third Stage: Executing the main work. This type of Kufic requires precise graphic and geometric execution, so it is done using geometric and graphic tools. Since the work is done on handmade, polished paper, it is highly sensitive and challenging. Several sheets of paper were used for practice and different executions before this exquisite piece was created.
Final Stage: As with other works, the final stage involves overall correction. This stage includes several steps, such as fixing minor errors and performing final touches and retouching of the lines. This is done using very fine pens and brushes with great care. The retouching and correction stage is the longest and may take months, but it ensures that the created work reaches the highest level of refinement, quality, and beauty, making it a lasting masterpiece.
