Description of the Kufic Calligraphy Artwork titled “Verse of Affection and Friendship” – Master Saber Safaei

Kufic script is the first Islamic script and is considered one of the most beautiful forms of Arabic calligraphy. Kufic has various types: architectural, decorative, and bookhand, each with its own branches and styles. The bookhand type is referred to as “Mushafi” or “Tahriqi,” and the style used in this piece is the Kufic Tahriqi.

This script was widely used for writing before the invention of the six major scripts in the 4th century AH (10th century CE). However, after the 7th century AH (13th century CE), its use in writing diminished, and it became more commonly used for decorations, handicrafts, architecture, and other arts. This script became one of the forgotten and obsolete scripts, sporadically used over the centuries by calligraphers with refined taste to create special artistic pieces.

In each era, perhaps only a handful of calligraphers were familiar with this script due to the lack of demand or practical use. In the current century, a small number of artists with artistic and visual flair have used this script for creating graphic works or in handicrafts, as it is beloved by graphic artists and even those with refined taste. 🌺🌸🌺

An Important Note: In 2013, Dr. Saber Safaei presented the Kufic Tahriqi (Mushafi) script at the International Ersika Festival in Turkey, held every three years in Istanbul, and won the first prize in this calligraphy Olympiad. Since then, all other types of Kufic scripts accepted by the judges in this festival have been set aside, and Kufic Tahriqi has taken their place.

From that year onward, Kufic Tahriqi has been accepted and recognized in prestigious festivals and biennials such as Ersika, Al-Burda in Dubai, Safir Kufa, and others. The calligraphy community owes this achievement to the efforts and meticulous thinking of Master Safaei, and he can be considered the reviver and introducer of Kufic Tahriqi in the contemporary world.

Currently, calligraphers from various styles have become interested in this script and are producing exquisite and presentable works.

Stages of Creating the Artwork

To create this magnificent artwork, several stages were undertaken, which are briefly outlined below:

  1. First Stage: Beginning the initial sketch to create the composition and arrangement of letters and words in the artwork, adhering to the visual and aesthetic principles of calligraphy. This stage requires high sensitivity and a significant amount of time.
  2. Second Stage: Executing the final sketch, selecting the appropriate pen and ink for the paper, and ultimately creating the final template. This stage may take days or weeks, requiring great precision and patience to ensure that all individual elements, curves, and angles are harmonious, rhythmic, organized, and beautiful.
  3. Third Stage: Executing the main artwork. Since this piece was created on sized and handmade paper, it carries great importance and sensitivity. Several sheets of paper may have been used for practice or during the execution to create this exquisite piece.
  4. Final Stage: Comprehensive refinement of the artwork, which involves multiple steps. In this stage, minor errors are corrected, and the final touches and retouching of the lines are done. This is accomplished using very fine pens and brushes with greater care. The retouching and refinement stage is the longest and may take months, but it ensures that the created artwork reaches the highest levels of refinement, execution quality, and beauty.
